"Pilates
for Men only" with Elena:
Martin
Luschin - Sunday 22.03.09
Hi all, Elena
will teach a "Pilates for Men" class in our new
venue as soon as we get sufficient numbers.
Pilates is definitely getting more popular with the guys, as more
and more experience and have heard about the different benefits that
Pilates offers.
In the last two years there are always a few guys in the Pilates
classes, some because the have heard that Pilates is good for you
"core" others come along with back trouble.
Pilates will help either group, as it works on mobility, flexibility
of the spine and the back, as well as on general back stretch, not
forgetting the toning effect for the whole body, especially your abs
and core. All this will happen if your stick with the exercises and
practise them on your own as well.

Hi all, we are
happy to let you know that we found a new venue for our City Centre

the Sebastian Guinness Gallery, across from the Meeting

At the same time I'm a bit sad that the Dublin Nutri Centre closed,

Pilates
Institute
UK
- taken over by
Multitrax?
Martin
Luschin - Thursday 11.09.08
Hi all, at the weekend I got told that the "Pilates
Institute" in the UK was taken over by some other company, I'm
not sure by whom, it could be Multitrax. Michael King, one of the
founders of the "Pilates Institute", is probably not
really happy about this. He and one other person put many years of
effort, time and commitment into it and now this.
It's a real shame if this is true. I met Michael King and talk to
him for a good while twice at different Fitness and Health related
trade shows in Germany, he is very pleasant to deal with,
professional and I really admire him for his knowledge, experience
and for what he did for Pilates.
If anybody knows more please let me know and I will put it up on the
blog.
I'm wondering what kind of impact this will have on the courses that
the "Pilates Institute
Ireland
"
runs here in
Dublin
and
in it's other locations around the country.

Back
Care Programme for Back Pain Prevention and Back Rehabilitation
planned ....
Martin
Luschin - Saturday 19.07.08
This afternoon I met up with another Personal Trainer regarding a
new idea in the area of back care.
We plan to organise back care workshops and course for:
1. Back Rehabilitation - for people with current back pain
and back issues
2. Back Pain Prevention - for people which had back pain and
want to be proactive to avoid reoccurrence
3. Back Care Education - for everybody that wants to learn
more about how to prevent back pain
 During
the last two to three years more and more individuals come to my
Pilates classes, who got told from their osteopaths, phyios,
physical therapists and general practitioners, GPs that they should
do Pilates or various core and back strengthening exercises to
tackle their back issues and back pain.
I suffered from lower back pain at the end of last year and nobody
could identify exactly from where it came. The discomfort and pain
faded gradually after practicing various specific Pilates and
Pilates like exercise that stretched, mobilised and strengthened my
lower back. I put in the time and effort over a few weeks and it
paid off, the pain vanished after about three weeks.
We plan to offer the following classes and programmes in
autumn/winter 2008:
1. One-To-One (
1-2-1
) Back
Care Programmes at our venue in Friarsland - Clonskeagh -
Dublin
14
2. Specific Back Care Group classes and courses - for people
with current back issues - in Friarsland - Clonskeagh
3. Weekend compact courses that cover the basics of back care,
strengthening and stretching exercises etc.
The pressure on the lumbar (lower) spine depends on your
body position:
The
graphic on the left shows the pressure on the lumbar (lower) spine
which depends to a big degree on you body position, as you can see
in the graphic. The pressure on the lumbar spine corresponds to 25kg
when you lie on the back and increases to around 250 kg when you sit
and lean forwards. This means you will put 11 times more pressure on
you lumbar spine if you sit and lean forwards.
Another reason to take good care of you back and to watch you
posture.

One-To-One
Pilates - 1-2-1 Pilates against "back pain" "back
issues" now available in Dublin City Centre:
Martin
Luschin - Thursday 17.07.08
From
this week onwards I'm going to be available for One-To-One (1-2-1)
Personal Pilates in the Dublin city centre, close to Grafton Street
in D2. If you have back pain or you want to work on and improve your
posture contact me in the Dublin Nutri Centre where I'm based from
now onwards every Wednesday.
Pilates for
Male and Female Athletes:
Pilates
is also used more and more by male and female athletes to:
1. Improve Flexibility
2. Improve Core Strength
3. Increase Mobility
4. Prevent Injuries
5. Rehabilitation after an Injury
I
found references from Premier League club, the All Blacks, Olympic
Swimmers, GAA players who use Pilates or Pilates like exercises to
work on their core strength and prevent injuries. Around two years
back I worked with the members a Dublin university based rowing team
who obviously knew of about the benefits that good core strength and
Pilates exercises offer.
And
to finish for today another Picture of Joseph Pilates:
Until then ..... Yours in Fitness and Healthy - Martin

Do
you want to be a Pilates Instructor? ...... read more here ....
Martin
Luschin - Sunday 06.07.08
It
might be interesting for some of you to know where you can study
Pilates to be a Pilates Instructor.
I did my initial mat based instructor course, certification with the
"Pilates Institute
Ireland
"
here in
Dublin
.
They
run different courses at the moment e.g. Pilates Mat work Level 1, 2
and 3, Pilates on the Ball, Pilates and Special Population, Pilates
and Small Equipment. They offer occasionally one-day workshops e.g.
Pilates choreography, Pilates for the Elderly, Medical Pilates etc.
The entry requirements are in most cases either a Fitness
Instructor, Personal Fitness Trainer qualification. It is an
advantage if you have a certain knowledge in anatomy and physiology,
exercise science, gym instruction and group exercise instruction.
It's nearly 6 years back that I did my initial Pilates Instructor
Course. Over the last few years I went back to do various other
courses with the Pilates Institute, that helped me to broaden my
experience and expertise, expertise that I'm eager to pass on the my
clients. This could be in a One-To-One scenario, in a group Pilates
classes in fitness centres, gyms or in various corporate settings.
Continuous education is something that I would recommend to anybody
working in the Fitness and Health industry, as researcher discover
new, better, more efficient approaches to exercising and achieving,
maintaining good health and well begin. Saying this, I should
probably do a few courses with other course providers. Ok, I did
"Lolita San Miguel's" two workshops in March 08, which
were interesting and inspiring.
Sorry, drifted a bit away from the main topic..... There are various
Pilates Instructor course providers out there. It's worth checking
out your options, as more and more organisations and companies
provide courses nowadays. Check their reputation, what kind of
certificate you get, the qualifications and experience of the
various tutors, how long they teach Pilates etc.
I can only recommend the "Pilates
Institute
Ireland
" which is run by
the National Training Centre, just
of Dorest Street in Dublin.
Drop me an e-mail if you want to know more!
Healthy regards

Question
- Pilates equipment books for e.g. the foam roller, dyna bands, fit
circles, gurdy ball and fit balls? Any body?
Martin
Luschin - Friday 20.06.08
Can anybody recommend books that show how to use the foam roller,
dyna bands etc.? I'm just wondering as a private client of mine
asked for specific books? I showed her various exercises with the
foam roller and fit circle, but she finds it hard to remember how to
do the exercise even with my stick man drawings.
The only useful book I found so far is "Pilates
Matwork Props Workbook" by Ellie Herman.

Interview
with Ron Fletcher - one of the Pilates Elders live on air - Newstalk
106
Martin
Luschin - Thursday 12.06.08
Hope all of you are well. This morning I heard a part of an interview
(Newstalk 106, around lunchtime) with Ron Fletcher who must be here
in
Dublin
at the moment. Does anybody
know anything about this?
I wonder if someone recorded the interview and could pass the
recording on. I looked up Newstalks webpage but couldn't find a
relevant podcast yet, they might make it public later.
Ron is one of the Elders who studied Pilates, or what was originally
known as Contrology at the time, with Joseph Pilates and his wife
Clara over 50 years ago. Click

Pilates Can Reduce Low Back
Pain according to research paper ....
Martin
Luschin - Sunday 08.06.08
"Pilates Based Therapeutic Exercise - Effect on Subjects With
Non-specific Chronic Low Back Pain / Functional Disability" - The
Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy, Rydeard, Leger
& Smith, July 2006.
The study was undertaken by researchers at the Queen's University
School of Rehabilitation Therapy. Subjects were physically active
individuals between the age of 20 and 55 with chronic back pain.
Subjects were divided into two groups: those who were treated in a
traditional manner (consultation with physicians and other
healthcare specialists); and those who were taken through a regime
of equipment-based exercises of the Pilates method that strengthen
core muscles in the lumbar-pelvic region.
After a four week period, subjects in both groups were objectively
tested for changes in their low back pain and their functional
disability. It was found that functional disabilities in the two
groups were markedly different - the Pilates group achieved a mean
score that was 37.5% better than the control group. With respect to
pain relief, the differences were even more pronounced: the Pilates
group achieved a mean score that was 46% better than the control
group. Though the study's exercise regime for the Pilates group
lasted just four weeks, researchers found that improvements were
still observable one year later.
The study concluded an exercise therapy approach based on the
Pilates method directed at neuromuscular control mechanisms was
efficacious in the treatment of a group of individuals with
non-specific chronic lower back pain. A 4-week programme was more
effective than usual care in reducing pain intensity and improving
functional ability levels, changes were maintained over a 12-month
period.
E-mail us (click here) if you are
interested in the full text of the research paper.

“Lolita San Miguel…one of two people in the
world certified by Joseph H. Pilates.”
by Martin Luschin - Thursday 05.06.08
In Mid March 2008 I had the pleasure to meet Lolita
San Miguel here in
Dublin
during a one day Pilates workshop “Lolita Shares her Mat for All” and
“Lolita Shares her Mat for Seniors”
She is a first generation teacher of the Pilates Method, born in New York
studied at the School of American Ballet and graduated from the Performing
Arts High School and was for 10 years a soloist with the Metropolitan
Opera Ballet. In 1958 she trained and was certified by Carola Trier and is
especially proud of being one of two people in the world certified by
Joseph H. Pilates.
It was a fascinating to hear Lolita telling stories about Joseph Pilates
and Carola Trier, what he was like as a person, his passion for health and
well being, his strong German accent and his style of teaching and
instructing. Partaking in Lolita Pilates classes was an amazing
experience. Her Pilates is slightly different to what I have studied her
in
Dublin
in the last six years.
Her grace, control and elegance was fascinating, considering that she is
in her 70’s and labels
herself as “the baby of the 5 Elders”.
I left the workshop with lot’s of new ideas for my classes here in
Dublin
, which some of my students already experienced.
